Your travel guide for Sri Lanka

History

Flag Rock, located at the southern tip of Galle Fort in Sri Lanka, is a historical site with roots in the colonial era. The bastion served an important role in maritime signaling during colonial times. Flags were hoisted here to warn approaching ships of the treacherous underwater rocks and reefs nearby. The strategic importance of Flag Rock highlights its role in the region’s history as a key maritime hub.

What to Expect

Flag Rock offers visitors breathtaking views of the ocean, making it one of the most popular spots in Galle Fort. The open expanse of the bastion provides unobstructed views, especially during sunrise and sunset, creating perfect opportunities for photography enthusiasts. On most days, the site is bustling with activity as both tourists and locals gather to take in the views or simply enjoy the ocean breeze.

The atmosphere is vibrant but not too crowded, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the serenity of the location. During the evenings, street vendors often set up near the bastion, selling local snacks and street food, adding to the charm of the experience. Flag Rock is also a great place to relax and take in the slower pace of life within the historic fort.

Cliff Diving Spectacles

One of the unique attractions at Flag Rock is the daring cliff diving performed by local divers. These divers leap from the top of the bastion into the ocean below, creating an adrenaline-filled spectacle for onlookers. They ensure they have the full attention of the crowd before making their dramatic leap. Their skill in precisely landing on a safe spot in the rocky, shallow waters below is truly impressive. Visitors are expected to pay a small fee for watching these thrilling performances.
