Your travel guide for Sri Lanka

Mohini Ella, also known as Mohini Falls, is a captivating waterfall situated near Maskeliya, at the base of Adam's Peak in Sri Lanka's Central Province. It's a memorable spot for anyone journeying through the area, whether you're heading to Adam's Peak or exploring nearby areas such as Maskeliya or Hatton.

Overview of Mohini Ella

"Mohini" is the name of a famous Sri Lankan ghost. She is said to appear as a beautiful woman dressed in white and carrying a baby. Some locals believe this spirit haunts the area near the waterfall and advise against visiting at night. This could be how the waterfall got its name. It could also be due to its strange shape or cascades that are said to look like the flowing hair of a woman. The waterfall is easily visible from the road, making it a convenient and picturesque stop for visitors. Surrounded by tall trees and tea plantations, Mohini Ella offers a serene environment that is great for a relaxing break on your journey.

Location and How to Get There

Mohini Ella is located almost 2 kilometers before reaching Nallathanniya on the road from Maskeliya. It is by the side of the Sri Pada road. From Hatton, proceed to Maskeliya, then continue towards Nallathanniya. The journey from Hatton to Mohini Ella covers about 30 kilometers and typically takes a bit over 1 hour. From Maskeliya, it is only a 25-minute drive and covers a distance of about 11-12 kilometers.

Best Times to Visit

You can enjoy Mohini Ella during the Adam's Peak climbing season, which lasts from December to May when the weather is generally clearer and access is easier. If you're visiting between May and September during the rainy season, you'll find the falls at their most impressive, with a heavier flow from the seasonal rains. It's a perfect stop on your way to nearby attractions, offering a quick yet refreshing break.

Given how it got its name, visiting the waterfall during the night is probably a bad idea.
